About Cynthia Lauer
Family lawyer
Cynthia received her Bachelor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law
School
in 1994, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1996.
She articled with the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee. During
this
time, she gained experience in representing persons with various
mental and psychiatric disabilities in family and children’s aid society
cases. Mental health
issues remain an area of expertise for her.
Following her call to the Bar, Cynthia started her own family law firm in
Scarborough, Ontario, in an office next to the family courts. Her practice
included work with victims of domestic violence, child protection
(Children's Aid
Society) cases, and clients from a wide range of cultural
groups. With her busy
practice, Cynthia was frequently in court on a
daily basis.
After the birth of her first child, Cynthia commenced a year –long contract
as
counsel with the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto. She
subsequently
worked with a Woodbridge, Ontario family law firm.
While Cynthia is an experienced courtroom litigator, she also recognizes
the
value of settling disputes in a non-adversarial manner where
appropriate. She
is an experienced and innovative negotiator, and is a
member of the York
Collaborative Practice Group and Collaborative
Practice Toronto as a
collaborative family lawyer.
Cynthia recognizes the importance of providing legal information and
services
to everyone. She has spoken about family law issues to
organizations serving
battered women and young mothers, including
Massey House, Rose of Sharon
and Juliette's Place.
In addition to her professional experience, Cynthia has also gained
practical
insight into family matters as the mother of three children.
