Fees and Payment Options:
For ongoing cases, we take a retainer (deposit). We will let you know
how much of a retainer will be required during the consultation. No
retainer is required for stand-along support services or consultations.
For your convenience, we accept payments by Visa, Mastercard, and
Interac.
Stand-alone ('Unbundled") Child and Spousal Support Services
While full legal representation is the ideal, the reality is that the cost of
going to court to deal with child or spousal support can sometimes
exceed the amount of the support paid! This is particularly true where
neither party is a high income earner.
For those situations, we also offer these alternatives to full legal
representation in support cases:
- DIVORCEmate support calculation consultation: providing you
with a printout of child or spousal support calculations, based
upon the Child Support Guidelines and Spousal Support
Advisory Guidelines, using the leading authoritative software.
Ideal for clients who need to accurately determine annual
adjustments for changes in income, child-related expenses,
etc.
- Court Document Preparation for those representing
themselves in support variation proceedings
Consultations
We generally recommend that you allow up to 1.5 hours for an initial,
comprehensive consultation. There is no charge for the first half hour
of the consultation.
During the consultation, we will:
- get an overview of your situation
- see what issues you need to address immediately
- review your options, including alternatives to court
- give you an idea of what a possible settlement may look like
There is no obligation to retain our services after a consultation. In
fact, a number of clients have met with us for a confidential
consultation prior to separating. We can give you valuable information
to allow you to make crucial "should I stay or should I go?" decisions.
Please note that we would never advise anyone to stay in a situation
where there is violence or other serious safety issues.
Independent Legal Advice:
We provide independent legal advice for clients who are going through
mediation, or who want to review an agreement which has already
been prepared.
